Introduce a splash of African style to your interiors with our range of neon pink and yellow striped baskets. Hand woven from local sisal grass by a skilled craftswoman working within a small cooperative in rural Kenya, this range of colourful baskets come in three different sizes for use all over the home. These bright baskets make fabulous fruit baskets and desk tidies, and can be used as both small and large planters for all manner of house plants. Need more inspo? The craftswomen behind these woven baskets have perfected the age-old art of weaving from their mothers and grandmothers, and work within a small, rural weaving cooperative. Where once these weavers would travel regularly to Nairobi to sell their woven baskets, The Basket Room (the designer) now provides them with regular and fairly-paid orders, and these completed baskets are then stored in purpose-built mud huts. As demand increases, the cooperative continues to thrive and grow under the guidance of its inspirational Chairlady, Madam Dorcas.
Each colourful woven basket comes with a thank you card from the weaving cooperative, and you can meet these weavers right here. Basket production takes place primarily during the dry seasons, since most weavers are from farming communicates who rely on subsistence farming and rainfall to sustain their families. To buy one of our woven baskets is to become a patron in our commitment to empowering women through fair trade.
