Binga Baskets 23-25 cm
Binga Baskets 23-25 cm
€19,95
These handwoven Binga baskets with Hwange border bring character, story and natural texture into your home. Each basket is truly one of a kind, with its own pattern, rhythm and colour tones. Hung on the wall, they create a beautiful, layered look. A single basket feels calm and understated, while a group of different sizes together turns your wall into something personal and full of life.
These baskets are handmade in Zimbabwe and sourced through fair trade, supporting local communities and keeping traditional craftsmanship alive. They are woven by women of the BaTonga people, a small community living near Lake Kariba in the north of the country. This craft has been passed down from mother to daughter for generations, and every basket carries that history within its weave.
The base of each basket is made from the leaves of the Ilala palm, a natural material known for its strength and flexibility. The leaves are carefully harvested, cut to size and dyed using natural pigments made from tree bark and roots. This gives the baskets their earthy, rich tones. The patterns are never random. They often represent meaningful symbols such as birds, lightning, love or zebra markings, each with its own story and cultural meaning.
Traditionally, these baskets were used for winnowing grain, separating wheat from chaff. It is a slow and thoughtful process to create one. A basket of around 35 centimetres can take up to two weeks to complete. You can feel that time and dedication in every detail, in every tightly woven line.
The Hwange border adds a striking finish to the design, giving the basket a defined edge that makes it stand out beautifully on the wall. Whether you style it in a calm, neutral space or combine it with other textures and tones, it always brings warmth and depth.
The BaTonga people were displaced in the 1950s when the Kariba dam was built, and today many communities live in dry and challenging conditions. Choosing these baskets means supporting their livelihoods and helping preserve a craft that might otherwise fade away. It is a piece with meaning, made with care and rooted in resilience.
We have several sizes available, which are lovely to mix and match for a playful wall arrangement. As each basket is unique, we are happy to share photos so you can choose the one that speaks to you.
