Bolga baskets, also known as Bolgatanga baskets, are handwoven in and around Bolgatanga, in the northernmost part of Ghana. These baskets are a beautiful example of traditional craftsmanship, made entirely by hand from sturdy elephant grass. The natural fibres are harvested locally and woven into strong, flexible shapes that are made to last. Colours range from vibrant and expressive to calm and natural, with each basket carrying its own character and rhythm.

The weaving of Bolga baskets is done exclusively by women. Sitting together in their villages, they carefully shape every basket by hand, a process that takes around five to six days for a single piece. It is slow, skilled work that requires patience and experience, and you can feel that dedication in every finished basket. No two are ever exactly the same, and that individuality is part of their charm.

The basket makers live in small villages around Bolgatanga and are not formally organised. Finding fair and reliable ways to bring their work to a wider audience is therefore essential. Through a partnership with TradeAID, a member of the World Fair Trade Organization, these baskets are brought to market in a way that respects the makers and their work. As a fair trade product, this ensures fair payment and a more stable income for the women who weave them.

Made from natural materials, Bolga baskets fit beautifully into a conscious interior. Elephant grass is strong, sustainable and flexible, and if a basket ever loses its shape, you can simply moisten it slightly and gently reshape it by hand. It will dry back into form, ready for everyday use again.

At Mayala Home, we have more Bolga baskets available than shown in the photos. Each basket is unique, and our collection is constantly changing. If you would like to see more options or receive additional information, feel free to contact us. We are happy to share extra photos and help you find the basket that feels just right for your home.

If you love the story behind these baskets, you might also enjoy our Binga wall baskets or Garlic Gourd baskets, each with their own tradition and handmade character.
