Tonga Stool
Tonga Stool
€74,00
These gorgeous little Tonga stools are hand-carved from a single piece of wood in Zimbabwe. They are made by the Batonga people in Binga, hence the name Batonga / Tonga stools. Traditionally these stools were used by aristocrats, elders and nobles as a portable seat, since it is very easy to transport and lightweight. Women were prohibited from sitting on stools. The Tonga stools carry significant meaning in African culture.
Use it in your home as a comfortable stool or handy side table, or enjoy it as a cultural artefact. Every piece is unique.
Tonga stools are still being used in rural African villages. These chairs are surprisingly comfortable, as they are traditionally used for rest, work and during traditional meetings. While most BaTonga stools are the same general style, they come in variety of designs, which are often geometric in form.
